This January 2008, Susan Simms celebrates her 20th year in business with The Knitting Habit! It started out in her home, then a storefront and now moves to cyberspace.
Susan started to knit and crochet at the age of seven by using her fingers to either chain stitch or knit the chairs in her kitchen together. Her Grandmother soon gave her a pair of red plastic 8" Imperial #4 (6mm) knitting needles and a ball of yarn to knit her first project - slippers. She still loves these needles for slippers which she can now complete knitting while watching a single movie.
With nobody to teach her more about crochet, Susan taught herself using library books. At 14 years old, she had completed her first crotched tablecloth. This was also the first project she sold. She was a budding entrepreneur!
Susan craved to learn more and more! After taking lessons where she unintentionally outshone the instructors, she began taking classes and knitting getaways with professional designers. Among these, Lilly Chin and Nancy Wiseman left a great impression!
During these classes Susan was also able to absorb great teaching techniques. She is known for her patience with students and loves to share her knowledge and passion for knitting and crochet while guiding each person at their own level. "I want to make their project a happy, fuzzy warm experience!", Susan says.
Susan will continue to offer lessons and group workshops for knitting and crochet and help with other needlearts such as cross stitch, needlepoint and more. Keep watching the web site to see where these will be held after the storefront closes.
Her Web site will remain a great way for Susan to promote the needlearts by selling quality products and sharing her skills. Susan will always continue to learn and share new skills, "There is always something to learn. It is refreshing to see when there is some other stitch or technique that I have not used yet!"
